Recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas”

In the place where three regions meet – Zemgale, Vidzeme, and Latgale, the recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas” has been welcoming its guests for more than ten years.

For several centuries, a manor stood here in Birži, on the banks of the Podvāze River. Evidence of it has almost disappeared, but we have ensured that the spirit of antiquity has not left the buildings today either – we have uncovered and highlighted both the ancient fieldstones and the valuable wooden beams and supports in the walls, which, combined with the new and modern, offer a unique union of the old and the new.
This creates an unforgettable atmosphere, a sense of authenticity and solidity. That is precisely why the guest house and recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas” is an excellent choice for travelers looking for overnight lodging, and for those seeking unique conditions for their celebrations, parties, banquets, seminars, or conferences.
In the courtyard of the holiday home, there is an area for sports or for setting up trampolines for entertainment. Electricity connection can be provided. There is an enclosed free parking area for cars.
The recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas” partners with the optional catering service café “Ceļavējš”. It also cooperates with the inflatable attractions provider “BB Batuti”.

A LOOK AT HISTORY

The territory of Sala Parish was first mentioned in written records in the 13th century in the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia. Given that the parish has been inhabited since ancient times, significant historical testimonies can be seen here. The Lutheran church, which has survived two world wars, rises in Birži, Sala Parish.
In the neighboring Sēlpils Parish, there is the Sēlpils hillfort with medieval castle ruins; it is on this very hillfort that the oldest evidence of humans in Latvia was found. Currently, most of the castle ruins are underwater, while the highest part of the ruins rises above it, which can be reached by boat. Krustalīči cliffs – the longest continuous cliffs in Latvia (approximately 2.5 km long) – are also located in Sēlpils Parish.
Many prominent and notable personalities who left a mark on Latvian culture and history came from Sala and Sēlpils Parish, such as the poet A. Līventāls, pastor J. Lundbergs, professor Pēteris Rizga, and others. Local residents have not forgotten these and other people, and to honor the memory of these personalities, they have established memorial sites that are, of course, open to visitors.
