Recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas”
In the place where three regions meet – Zemgale, Vidzeme, and Latgale, the recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas” has been welcoming its guests for more than ten years.
For several centuries, a manor stood here in Birži, on the banks of the Podvāze River. While testimonies of it have almost disappeared, we have ensured that the spirit of antiquity remains within the buildings today. In the walls, we have uncovered and highlighted both ancient fieldstones and valuable wooden beams and supports. Combined with new and modern elements, they offer a unique fusion of the old and the new.
This creates an inimitable atmosphere and a sense of authenticity and solidity. That is exactly why the guest house and recreation complex “Ūdensdzirnas” is an excellent choice for travelers looking for overnight accommodations, as well as for those seeking a unique setting for their celebrations, parties, banquets, seminars, or conferences.
In the courtyard of the holiday home, there is a field for sports or setting up trampolines for entertainment. An electricity connection can be provided. There is also an enclosed free parking area for cars.

A LOOK AT HISTORY
The territory of Sala Parish was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th-century Chronicle of Henry. Given that the parish has been inhabited since ancient times, significant historical testimonies can be seen here. In Birži, Sala Parish, stands a Lutheran church that has survived two world wars.
In the neighboring Sēlpils Parish, you can find the Sēlpils hillfort with medieval castle ruins; it is on this very hillfort that the oldest evidence of human presence in Latvia was discovered. Currently, most of the castle ruins are underwater, with the highest part rising above it, which can be reached by boat. Sēlpils Parish is also home to the Krustalīcis cliffs – the longest continuous cliffs in Latvia (approximately 2.5 km long).
Many outstanding and prominent personalities who have left a mark on Latvian culture and history come from Sala and Sēlpils parishes, such as the poet A. Līventāls, pastor J. Lundbergs, professor Pēteris Rizga, and others. The local residents have not forgotten about these and other individuals, and to honor their memory, they have created memorial sites that are, of course, open to visitors.
